What is Vegan Accommodation?
There is no exact definition of what vegan accommodation is. As we live in a non-vegan world it is difficult to create a 100% vegan hotel or vegan B&B. However, generally speaking, vegan accommodation is a place to stay which is as cruelty-free as possible. From the food to toiletries – it all has to be vegan. Vegan accommodation provides incredible vegan breakfasts, cruelty-free toiletries and vegan-friendly interiors. No eggs in sight or sneaky honey in toiletries when you stay at a vegan hotel in the UK. Guests are asked not to bring non-vegan food to vegan hotels and vegan B&Bs. In vegan self-catering accommodation, it can be harder to monitor what guests bring but generally speaking, in order to class yourself as a vegan self-catering apartment guests should not bring non-vegan produce with them. Some vegan accommodation even go a step further to ensure that carpets and even the paint on the walls is vegan.
Is the UK vegan-friendly?
If you had asked whether UK is a vegan-friendly place a few years ago, the answer would have been no. As a nation who love fish and chips, Yorkshire puddings, roast beef and cream tea, many national dishes are not vegan. Yet in the last few years there has been a vegan take over! With London frequently topping the list of most vegan-friendly city in the world as well as cities like Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol and Brighton with their wonderful vegan venues, the UK is a great place for vegans to visit! You can even get vegan fish and chips, vegan afternoon tea and vegan Yorkshire puddings now! The supermarkets are all stocked with wonderful vegan products and often goods in health retailers are labelled as vegan showing how far the UK has come.
However, as soon as you leave the cities, it can be a little trickier to be a vegan. Chips at fish and chip shops are fried in beef dripping. Small cafes in national parks seem to only offer cheese or meat sandwiches. This is also the case when finding vegan-friendly accommodation in the UK. Many B&Bs offer a full English breakfast which is comprised out of sausages, egg, beans, toast, black pudding and toast with butter. Not a very vegan-friendly breakfast. Many hotels will have breakfast buffets but might not have plant milks or dairy-free butter. Whilst it is getting better, it can still be a pain for vegans trying to find vegan-friendly accommodation. Therefore, why not treat yourself to a stay at a vegan hotel in UK! Whether you are based in the UK already or looking to visit, rest easy knowing that there will be an amazing vegan breakfast waiting for you and no need to worry about what’s in the toiletries. Some vegan accommodation in the UK even offer zero-waste toiletries!
